The Gateway of India, built in yellow basalt, commemorates the royal visit of King George V and Queen Mary in 1911. The Gateway of India does for Mumbai what the Statue of Liberty does for New York. This Gateway acts like a Gate welcoming people visiting Mumbai by ship, as a Gate that leads to this Indian city. The Gateway of India has been considered a trademark of the city of Mumbai, for which Mumbai is highly known and is the most visited to see. Opposite to this historical spot, lies the great Taj Mahal Palace, the flagship property of Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces, which is said to have given birth to a legendary style of hospitality in India. Afghan Church is another striking edifice. Built between 1847 and 1958, this grand Neo-Gothic structure, with its tall spire was built in memory of the soldiers who died in the first 1853 Afghan War, which today stands as a great historical monument in Mumbai where tourists and locals visit to remember the grand contribution of those brave soldiers.
Towards Fort, you'll find historical buildings that are magnetic in their appeal, especially if you enjoy striking architecture like these buildings. Victoria Terminus, designed by F.W. Stevens, is built in the Italian Gothic style of architecture. The design of the High Court, an elegant 1848 Neo-Gothic building was inspired by a German castle. The University of Mumbai, another striking historical site, was designed by Gilbert Scott of London's St. Pancras Station fame. Rajabai Clock Tower, another historical marvel, is a 78-metre tower adorned with fingers representing different Indian communities. A short distance away is the Kenneseth Eliyahoo Synagogue, which is the oldest Sephardic synagogue in Mumbai.

Distinguished by its rolling hills and deciduous, is another historical site, the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, at Borivali, which contains substantial bird life and an extraordinary complex of 109 Buddhist caves called the Kanheri Caves that date from the 1st century BCE to 9th century CE. The Bassein Fort, established by the Portuguese, now occassionally used for shooting Bollywood films in Mumbai, is an interesting historical spot to visit. The chapels inside the fort have facades typical of 17th century Portuguese churches.
