13 Sad Reasons Why There Should Not Be A Labour Day Celebration in India

India, a democratic country which deems to be a highly developing nation in various fields of science, technology, economy, arts and human resource. While the entire nation celebrates the 1st of May as labour day, as a celebration of labourers and the working classes but truth be told, it is just sad to see the condition of labourers in India and how labour exploitation is such an issue yet quite ignored.

Yes, labourers need to be recognized and be celebrated for the constant effort they put in their lives to make the lives of every general public better but how can there be a celebration when labour in India is just an exploitation. These are 13 sad reasons why  there should not be a May Day Celebration in India:

1. Because this kids deserves to get an education, play with toys and grow up like any normal kid, smiling, playing and going to school. Definitely not  exploited into child labour.

2. Forced labour and labour trafficking should be a concern, to the government as well as to the company that administers it. Is the country ever going to have a labour reformation that actually works?

3. Workers making clothes in India that end up in high end stores and big brands in British street, testify the labour abuse, threats and poverty pay. The Guardian reports India's clothing workers crying 'They slap us and call us dogs and donkeys'

4. Child maid servant in India is common where children are often sent by their parents to earn extra money. Has these been ever stopped?

5. David Browne from Equal Times reports, that 13-year-old cotton picker Methtli is among several hundred thousand children –mostly girls– who sacrifice their education and health to produce cotton for a thriving industry.

6. In India, these news still occur and yes, thisone is only one out of thousands of other stories that never make up to the news.

7.  Because labour day cannot be a celebration when every minutes of the day, a woman or a child is sold.

8. Human trafficking is happening and even if it's 2016, hasn't stopped yet.

9. Or take a look at these tea garden workers, who commit their lives in working so hard to create a brand, that the world recognizes as the best yet, these labours are exploited with the lowest wages and working conditions.

10. While the government makes honored statements about technological advancements, there are labours like this unclogging blocked drains for the lowest wage one could receive.

11. Let's talk about minimum labour wages. Well, India doesn't even have one officially but when roughly calculated it is $0.28 and yes, we claim to be one of the most highly developing nations in the world.

12. Because in India, we believe in celebrations and festivals. We will burst firecrackers and lighten up the sky in Diwali and New Year's even if those fire cracker companies exploit labourer to work in such pathetic and unsafe conditions.

13. Well here is an old woman, who in the age of retirement and rest, working hard in an unsafe environment with pitiful money at a matchstick factory. Does this spite any celebration for labourers in India?

Maybe one day, we no longer can find any of these in India and that day would be such a happy day and then there would be a celebration for labourers in India. A true May Day celebrated everyday in India when these sad labour exploitation ends.
So this May Day, lets not just claim it as a public holiday but as an individual, raise voice against child labour, labour exploitation and trafficking. Because no one deserves to be exploited like that especially in a country which deems itself to be one of the highly developing nation.
